October 09, 2009
On the heels of receiving the mobile license from Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications in April 2009, Vietnamese telecom operator Vinaphone recently announced that it is set to launch its 3G services on October 12, 2009, the Viet Nam Net News reported on October 2. Vinaphone stated that the company has completed trial runs for 3G services, including video calls, mobile TV, and broadband internet services and has finished the installation of thousands of 3G transceiver base stations delivered by Motorola and ZTE. Under the agreement previously signed, ZTE would provide approximately 2,000 base stations for Vinaphone. Furthermore, the company also stated that it has achieved a smooth connection between 2G and 3G networks, adding that 3G service charges will be announced on the launch day. Asides from Vinaphone, Viettel, MobiFone and a JV formed between EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom also were also awarded 3G mobile licenses, with their 3G trials now underway.
